Ah, Greece, the sparkling ocean waters, the delectable cuisine… the murder?!
It’s time for paradise to become a little less idyllic Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mysterythe continuation of the great success of 2019 Knives out from writer-director Rian Johnson.
On Thursday, ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend, Netflix released the first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated whodunnit.
“The line I kept coming back to when talking about the first movie is, ‘It’s a roller coaster, not a crossword puzzle,'” writer-director-producer Rian Johnson told Netflix’s Tudum website. “It’s a common mistake to write a whodunit, thinking that you’re doing a crossword puzzle and that the fun part is that the audience will sort it all out and figure it out. I know when I’m reading or watching a whodunit, I always leave the idea to figure it out about one third of the way”.
Netflix Daniel Craig in “Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery”
Glass onion returns audiences to the world of detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he travels to Greece to unravel a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects. It combines the classic whodunnit style of Agatha Christie mysteries with the playful atmosphere of “tropical escape murder mystery” films like 1982 Evil under the sun and of 1973 The Last of Sheila. Johnson has previously cited the latter as a major influence, and the films even share an inciting incident: a group of friends are invited to a glamorous and exotic location to play a murder mystery game.
Benoit Blanc must contend with a gallery of rogue suspects, each with their own secrets. Except for Craig, Glass onion Starring Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.
Unlike the notoriously complicated Thrombey-Drysdale family of yesteryear, it’s hard to point the finger at a preliminary culprit among Johnson’s latest characters (at least from the trailer).
The lives of the flamboyant Hudson, the reserved Norton and the rest of the housemates remain private. However, throughout the teaser clip, the team seems to be subtly divided into two categories: brains and minds. The characters of Monae, Hahn and Odom Jr. navigate a series of complex puzzles with ease, while the characters of Hudson, Bautista and Cline showcase nearly every weapon found in a game Indication. While it’s unclear which trait is the best to have in the end, one thing is certain: Benoit Blanc’s skills will definitely be put to the test once again.
“I’m always fishing for something fun that Blank can grab as an over-the-top metaphor that he can beat to death,” Johnson previously told Tudum, explaining how he came up with the title. “All of this is visible from the beginning. So I came up with the idea of the glass, which is clear. I’ll be very honest: I literally took out my iPhone and looked in my music library with the word glass. “There must be some good glass songs.” I was like, “Oh, it’s a glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is he a glass man?’ The first thing that came up, because I’m a big Beatles fan, is ‘Glass Onion’.”
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will premiere in select theaters on a date to be announced and will be released worldwide on Netflix on December 23rd. Watch the teaser above.
