Stolen fan favorite contestant Celia Muñoz gets a second chance on ‘AGT’

The fifth and final live results show his AMERICA has talent Season 17 took place on Wednesday, and while the previous night’s qualifying round was packed with talent — so much so that Simon Cowell said it might actually have been mistaken for the season finale — the two obvious front-runners made it, and I featured: Lebanese dance troupe Mayyas (Sofia Vergara’s Golden Buzzer) and Australian pole-dancer/multimedia artist Kristy Sellars.

But next week’s finals won’t just feature a top 10. Instead, there will be a top 11. During Wednesday’s episode, each of the judges — who had zero participation during the live shows due to the controversial revamped form this season — they suggested a wild card act. Viewers then had just five minutes to instantly vote one of those four contestants into the final.

Simon, interestingly, chose the Players Choir, a singing troupe of former NFL stars. Howie Mandel, claimed he had three acts in mind, but ultimately went with corporate comedian Don McMillan, (power) pointing out that Don had a respectable third place in his qualifying week and missed out on making the finals by only 2 % of public vote. Heidi Klum went with Golden Buzzer singer-songwriter Lily Meola, who also missed out on the final with her third-place finish last week. (Interestingly, none of the judges nominated this week’s near-hashes, singer Kristen Cruz, stunt group Urbancrew, or rap wizard Mervant Vera, who rounded out Wednesday’s top five.)

However, clearly the most popular wildcard nomination came from Sofia, who chose fellow ventriloquist Celia Muñoz. Celia stood out in her qualifying week with one Grease-featuring the recently departed Olivia Newton-John, and her elimination was arguably the biggest shock of this entire season. “I think she deserves to be here because I think her talent is very spectacular and she’s very creative,” Sofia explained.

It was no shocker, then, that after the commercial break, host Terry Crews announced that… Celia won Wednesday’s instant save vote. “Thank you all! Thank you, Sophia! Thank you, America! I am truly grateful for this second chance. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you all!” Celia exclaimed from a distance as she heard the good news while watching AGT at home.

So now Mayyas, Kristy and Celia will be joined by saxophonist Avery Dixon, country music acts Drake Milligan and Chapel Hart, teenage singer Sara James, augmented reality team MetaPhysic, magicians Yu Hojin and Nicolas Ribs and stand -up comic Mike E. Winfield in next week’s finals. Simon has predicted it will be the closest contest AGT history — and if she gets a second chance like Celia, it will surely be historic. Plus, Mike could be the first comedian to ever win AMERICA has talentand we’ve certainly never seen an AR or saxophone actor win the show.

We will also have artists representing Lebanon, Australia, Spain, South Korea and France as well as the United States, so this will be more like The World’s Got Talent. So watch next Tuesday as the top 11 take to the international stage.
