Jahleel Billingsley suspended, will not play against Alabama football

After all, Alabama football won’t be seeing Jahleel Billingsley in Week 2.

The former Crimson Tide tight end is in the midst of his six-game suspension, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian announced Saturday after the Longhorns’ win over Louisiana Monroe.

Sarkisian said it’s not about anything that happened during Billingsley’s time at Texas but at his previous stop, Alabama.

Billingsley transferred to Texas (1-0) last offseason.

“He’s in the process of that (dismissal),” Sarkisian said. “He still has five games ahead of him. We’ll bring him back for the Big 12 game.”

While Alabama (1-0) won’t be facing its former tight end when the two teams meet at 11 a.m. Saturday in Austin, Texas, there will be another recent member of the Crimson Tide expected to be available to play.

Receiver Agiye Hall.

Hall, a second baseman, was reinstated from a suspension for the first game of the season. He was serving indefinite probation after his August arrest on a felony charge.

“Agiye Hall is back with the team, which we’re excited to have,” Sarkisian said. “It’s great to have him back and going with us and being a part of our program. Proud of the work he did to get back.”

Hall also transferred to Texas this offseason.

Both drew the ire of Nick Saban at different points in 2021 before transferring to Texas. Hall was suspended in the spring for violating team rules.

“Everybody has a responsibility and an obligation to respect principles and values and do what they have to do,” Saban said when he announced Hall’s suspension in April. “They’re all there to help them be more successful. Doing that is always very helpful.”

Hall entered his name on the transfer gate shortly after. During the 2021 season, Hall didn’t see much playing time with 78 total snaps, per Pro Football Focus. After the Mississippi State game, Hall tweeted “Yeah nah, calling it quits” before later deleting it. He was not in uniform before the game at Tennessee.

Billingsley has had a bumpy start to the 2021 season. When asked if Billingsley was back on the depth chart, Saban sent a stern message.

“That’s up to him,” Saban said in August 2021. “That’s not up to me. He knows what he needs to do in practice. He knows what he needs to do. It’s not a democracy. Not everyone gets to do what they want to do. they do. Everybody can’t do what they want to do. You have to buy in and do what you’re supposed to do to be part of the team and do the things that we have to do in practice every day.”

Billingsley did not start in the opener against Miami, but continued to see fairly regular playing time. Billingsley finished the season with 17 receptions for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
