The Ohio State football team will take on Notre Dame to kick off the 2022 college football season, and few games in early September are as anticipated as this one.

Ohio State comes in ranked No.2 in the country while the Fighting Irish are No.5. It is the only matchup between two top-five teams on the Week 1 schedule.

The Buckeyes enter as 17.5-point favorites over Notre Dame, which will try to defeat OSU on the day the 2002 national championship team is honored at Ohio Stadium, which is celebrating its 100th season.

The Buckeyes haven’t played well in a few recent non-conference home games, but they match up well against the Irish. It’s just hard to imagine a Notre Dame offense with a starter at quarterback scoring enough to win, especially if OSU’s defense is as improved as advertised.

A matchup of college football’s blue bloods, both ranked in the top five of the preseason polls, looks like it would have the makings of a game with the potential to come down to the wire. But don’t expect it to bite the nail in the fourth quarter. The Irish, with only a half-dozen healthy scholarship players, don’t have the firepower to keep up with an offense that had the nation’s highest scoring offense last fall and returns its most central pieces, led by the Heisman Trophy favorite quarterback. Also consider that the Horseshoe might be a tough practice field for first-year coach Marcus Freeman, and Ohio State should come away with a few touchdowns.

This top five matchup lives up to the hype – for about a quarter and a half. After that, the TV booth will be forced to start telling life stories of the players to fill the time. Ohio State simply has too much offensive firepower for the Fighting Irish to handle. If this was last season’s OSU defense, it might be a different story, but the Buckeyes will be better on that side of the ball. Not ND coach Marcus Freeman who was hoping for the boot.

With all eyes on Ohio Stadium on Saturday night, Ohio State will begin to show a clear distinction between the No. 2 and No. 5 spots in the AP poll. Without many of its starters, Notre Dame’s offense will be a good training ground for the Buckeyes’ new-look defense under Jim Knowles, while the Buckeyes’ offense will pick up where it left off in Pasadena, California. This game won’t be close for first-year coach Marcus Freeman.

The Buckeyes will prove more vulnerable than oddsmakers thought with that outrageous 17.5-point spread, but they simply have too many weapons, especially at the skill positions, for the Irish to pull off the upset. If Notre Dame is to join Oregon (2021) and Oklahoma (2017) as the only road teams to win at Ohio Stadium since the start of 2016, first baseman Tyler Bachner will have to match CJ Stroud’s laser for laser. Tonight, even with Michael Mayer out, it’s too much to ask.
