Not all gifts come in pretty boxes with colorful bows – like the time Johnny Depp gave Kate Moss a diamond necklace she snagged from his bum.
In reviewing some of her famous looks with Fashion, the 48-year-old British supermodel told a truly unforgettable story about a gift from ex Johnny Depp. It came from what she wore to the 1995 CFDA Fashion Awards – a white John Galliano dress paired with a separate sparkling necklace given to her by Pirates of the Caribbean star, whom he dated between 1994 and 1998.
“Johnny gave me this diamond necklace,” Moss said proudly. “They were the first diamonds I ever had.”
Then he began to go into the dirty details of how they were gifted.
“He pulled them out of his ass crack,” he offered. “We were going out for dinner and he said, ‘I’ve got something in my bum,’ showing how he put his hand down the back of his trousers. “Can you take a look? I was like, “What?” I reached down his pants and pulled out a diamond necklace. That diamond necklace.”
Moss went on to talk about her iconic fashion moments — as if viewers didn’t pause the video at that point to say, “Come on again?” and listen a few times to try to confirm what he said.
She spoke to the fashion outlet shortly after testifying on Depp’s behalf in his Virginia defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, which ended on June 1. She said there was “peace and courage” behind her testimony. “I’m glad I did it. It had to be done,” he said.
Moss was called as a rebuttal witness by Depp’s legal team in May to dispel a rumor, which Heard referred to in his deposition, that the actor abused Moss during the pair’s 1990s relationship. Appearing virtually, Moss recounted the alleged incident at the Goldeneye Resort in Jamaica, explaining that what actually happened was that she slipped down the storm-drenched stairs and injured her back. Depp, who was already outside, heard her screaming and “ran back to help me.” He said he took her to their room “and asked me for medical help.” Moss, who has never testified in any trial before, noted that Depp “never pushed me, kicked me or threw me down any stairs” while they were together.
Days after the deposition, Moss was spotted leaving Depp’s performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Moss told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Islands Discs program the following month that she testified for Depp because, “I believe in the truth and I believe in fairness and justice. I know the truth about Johnny. I know he never kicked me down the stairs .I had to tell this truth.”
Depp won his defamation lawsuit against Heard, who he said made defamatory statements about him in her article about surviving sexual and domestic violence. Heard, who countersued for defamation over comments Depp’s lawyer made about her, won only one of three counterclaims against the actor.
Moss and Depp were one of the hottest couples of the 90s. She previously said she was heartbroken after their split.
“There’s no one who’s ever really been able to take care of me,” she said Vanity fair in 2012. “Johnny did for a while. I believed what he said. Like if I said, ‘What should I do?’ years of weeping. Oh, the tears!”
Depp said Hello! magazine six years later, “I’ve never been so emotional about a woman before,” once reportedly trashing a New York hotel room after an argument. “I was so stupid because we had so much going on in our relationship. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for what happened – I was hard to cope with, I let my job get in the way and I did” don’t pay attention to her which I should have done.’ He called himself “horrible to live with” and “completely stupid at times.”
