Meghan Markle continues to talk about her life with Prince Harry after officially stepping down from the royal family, saying she is deliberately keeping details of her past life to herself.
“It’s interesting, I’ve never had to sign anything that restricts me from speaking. I can speak about my whole experience and make a choice not to,” she said. The cutnoting that the reason she has remained silent is that she is “still healing”.
Mental health has been at the forefront of the couple’s journey since Markle revealed in a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey how much she struggled. During the March 2021 special, she and Harry said the company’s reluctance to get Markle the help she needed was one of the many reasons they stepped away.
During a recent trip to London for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Markle said she returned to Frogmore Cottage, which she and Harry used to call home. As she packed, she thought about some of those difficult times.
“You go back and open drawers and go, ‘Oh my God. Was that what I was writing in my journal over there?'” she said, adding that it felt “surreal” to be back. “It was bittersweet, you know? Knowing none of this, it didn’t have to be this way.”
Both Markle and Harry have revealed some of their reasons for what British tabloids have deemed their ‘Megxit’. Markle contributes some of the friction to the fact that she was simply ill-prepared for the role. When she became the Duchess of Sussex, she decided the best course of action was to do as she was told.
“I was an actor. My whole job was ‘Tell me where to stand.’ Tell me what to say. Tell me how to say it. Tell me what to wear and I’ll do it’. And I’ll show up early and probably bake something for the crew,” she explained. While there are many works of fiction that reflect her real-life experience, Markle said she hadn’t seen them. ever. “That would be really helpful. That would be a very basic tutorial that you should have had before all of this.”
Ultimately, Markle said that “just by existing, we were disrupting the dynamic of the hierarchy” as she and Harry became consistent tabloid fodder. As they have worked to make a new life for themselves in California, much of the journey takes back their narrative.
Markle is doing so with her newly launched Archetypes podcast, which she says is a sort of reintroduction to herself. “It’s so real,” she told the publication. “I feel different. I feel clearer. It’s like I’m finding — I’m not finding my voice, I’ve had my voice for a long time, but I can use it.”
However, she remains cautious in how she uses her voice in the hope that she can find peace within her family, as she has an estranged relationship with her father and the royal family.
“I think forgiveness is very important. It takes a lot more energy to not forgive. But it takes a lot of effort to forgive. I’ve really made an active effort, especially knowing that I can say anything,” she said. “I’ve got a lot to say until I don’t. You like that? Sometimes, as they say, the dumb part is still part of the song.”
Meanwhile, she’s focused more on building a happy life for her children Archie, 3, and Lilybet, 1, with her partner in all things Harry. “We are like salt and pepper”, that of their relationship. “We always move together.”
