“Ben Affleck is a catch”

Kevin Smith can’t tell if the dress Jennifer Lopez wore to her first of two weddings to new husband Ben Affleck was from his poster Jersey Girlas the internet has been theorizing for the past few weeks.

“Maybe that was it, I didn’t ask,” Smith told Yahoo Entertainment on Tuesday at a virtual press day for his latest film, Clerks IIIabout the connection being made Jersey Girl, the 2004 comedy he directed and co-starred the famous duo (see above). “When I saw them I didn’t say, ‘Hey man, can you fix me the internet?’ That would be good for my brand!”

Smith saw the newlyweds at their second wedding last weekend at Affleck’s sprawling Georgia estate, where the power duo were originally set to marry before splitting in 2004. (The director subsequently cut their wedding scene Jersey Girl(afraid it would distract viewers.)

This time, Smith tells us, it was the stuff of classic Hollywood romance.

“I was so overwhelmed by the wedding itself,” he says. “I’m a big fat romantic at heart, so I love love. And they have a fantastic love story that now has this beautiful ending—it doesn’t end, it begins, almost. They stuck the landing, they came full circle, so to speak.

“Well, I went because of the fact that, ‘Yes, I can see what we saw almost many years ago. Good for these guys. But what I got was very moving. We have a show that, a lot of people pay cash to see a movie that makes them feel so good. It makes them believe in love… We got it for free, man. It’s just I went and saw our friend get married and it was one of the best moments of my life, and it didn’t even happen to me.”

Smith was especially moved watching longtime friend Affleck, who he first directed in 1995 Malrach, you look so happy. They have made many memorable films together, including Chasing Amy (1997) and Doctrine (1999) – though the pair later hit a rough patch before rekindling their friendship and creative partnership when the actor appeared in 2019 Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. (He also enters Clerks III.)

“I’ve known this cat for 27 years – we met when he came to the audition Malrach, and then we became friends,” says Smith. “He’s one of my favorite people on the planet, one of my favorite artists, one of my favorite writers. That’s why I was so happy during their wedding, because they wrote vows together, and he wrote a long speech, and I was like, “Oooh, I’m going to listen to Ben Affleck read his speech all day.

“I’ve seen him be happy. This is an Oscar-winning guy … I’ve never seen a man, let alone him, as happy as he was standing there walking [down the aisle]… It was emotional. From that moment I was screaming.”

Smith has only good wishes for the happy couple.

“Jennifer Lopez is one of the luckiest people on the planet,” he says. “He just got Ben Affleck. Ben Affleck is a catch.”
